New Delhi - Bollywood actresses Shefali Shah and Huma Qureshi, along with Archana Puran Singh and Sunil Grover, attended the Sekhon IAF Marathon 2025 held in New Delhi on Sunday, November 2. The event, hosted by the Indian Air Force (IAF) at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, aimed to promote fitness and honor Flying Officer Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon, the sole recipient of the Param Vir Chakra from the IAF.
The marathon featured a half-marathon, a 10-km run, and a 5-km run, drawing hundreds of participants. Air Chief Marshal AP Singh flagged off the event, emphasizing the importance of a "Fit India," a vision championed by PM Modi. Accompanying the marathon was the unveiling of the new series "Operation Safed Sagar," starring Jimmy Shergill.
However, the event has sparked controversy due to Delhi's severely deteriorated air quality. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the Air Quality Index (AQI) reached 421 near AIIMS and surrounding areas, categorized as "Severe". This hazardous air quality prompted a wave of criticism online, with many questioning the sensibility of hosting a marathon in such conditions.
Internet users have expressed their concerns and outrage, with some labeling the event "senseless" and questioning the purpose of organizing a marathon in a "gas chamber". Critics argue that promoting physical activity amidst toxic air contradicts health advisories urging people to leave Delhi. One user questioned why a marathon was being organized under such polluted conditions when doctors are advising people to leave Delhi.
The presence of celebrities like Shefali Shah and Huma Qureshi at the event has further fueled the online backlash. Some netizens feel their participation sends a conflicting message, as they are seen endorsing an event that potentially endangers public health. The criticism primarily targets the organizers for proceeding with the marathon despite the known risks associated with Delhi's air pollution.
