Veteran actor Anupam Kher has revealed that Naseeruddin Shah recently apologized for his remarks made during their public feud in 2020. The reconciliation reportedly occurred at filmmaker HD Pathak's memorial service.
The disagreement between the two acclaimed actors began when Shah criticized Kher for his pro-government stance amidst the controversy surrounding Deepika Padukone's visit to Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). In a 2020 interview with The Wire, Shah referred to Kher as a "clown" and said he didn't need to be taken seriously, adding, "It's in his blood, he can't help it".
Kher responded to Shah's comments at the time with a video posted on X (formerly Twitter), stating that he had never spoken ill of Shah. He added that Shah, despite his success, seemed to be perennially frustrated, and that he was in good company as Shah had also criticized figures like Dilip Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan, Rajesh Khanna, Shah Rukh Khan, and Virat Kohli. Kher suggested Shah's judgment might have been clouded by "substances" he had consumed for years.
In a recent conversation with Samdish Bhatia, Kher revisited the episode, noting that Shah sometimes engages in "loose talk" about him but that he still holds Shah in high regard. "I still feel that I have a great respect for him," Kher said. He recounted the recent meeting where Shah apologized, saying, "When we met, he was saying sorry. Naseer told me to hug him because I always hug him". Kher has also expressed admiration for Shah, acknowledging him as the biggest star in parallel cinema.
Despite the apology, Kher hinted at underlying tensions, suggesting that Shah's remarks might stem from some kind of bitterness, with Kher, Dilip Kumar, and Rajesh Khanna sometimes becoming the "victim" of Shah's comments.
Kher has addressed the feud in other interviews as well. In a conversation with Shubhankar Mishra, Kher stated that it was important to respond when someone comments inappropriately about one's principles. He also mentioned that they had met cordially at their CA's funeral and hugged.
Speaking on YouTube channel Zindagi with Richa, Kher addressed Shah's comments about his upbringing, saying that while he respects Shah, he felt the need to respond when his pride was hurt. He stated that his family and education have taught him to be calm but also to stand up for himself. Kher added that "people don't change" and that "slowly with time people start showing their reality".
Kher has also spoken about putting aside his differences with filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt, whom he considers a guru and father figure.
Kher and Shah last worked together in the 2018 film Aiyaary.
