Vir Hirani, son of acclaimed filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani, is preparing to make his digital debut in an upcoming film directed by Shakun Batra. This project marks a significant step for the young Hirani, introducing him to audiences through a contemporary, digitally-driven feature film.
Shakun Batra, known for his nuanced narratives and ability to capture the complexities of modern relationships, is set to launch Vir in a lead role. The film aims to blend compelling storytelling with modern sensibilities suitable for the digital age.
Reports indicate that pre-production is in full swing, with filming expected to commence in the first quarter of 2026. While the film's title and specific details are under wraps, sources suggest that actress Wamiqa Gabbi is in talks to play the female lead.
Vir Hirani is a graduate of London's prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA). Before this project, Vir gained recognition for his 35-minute monologue in Feroz Abbas Khan's play, Letters of Suresh in 2024.
In addition to the Shakun Batra film, Vir Hirani is also expected to appear in Pritam Pedro, a web series by his father, Rajkumar Hirani, which will be released on JioHotstar. This series reportedly revolves around two cops with distinct working styles and will feature Arshad Warsi and Vikrant Massey.
Another project in the pipeline for Vir is a love story produced by Hansal Mehta and directed by Lijo Jose Pellissery, with music by A.R. Rahman. Lijo Jose Pellissery is known for his work in Malayalam cinema, including Angamaly Diaries (2017) and Jallikattu (2019).
Rajkumar Hirani's last movie, Dunki (2023), featured Shah Rukh Khan, Taapsee Pannu, Vicky Kaushal, and Boman Irani. The film explored the journey of Indians using the illegal 'donkey route' to immigrate to the UK. Hansal Mehta, on the other hand, recently premiered his web series Gandhi at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and is also helming a business drama for Netflix starring Anil Kapoor and Vijay Varma.
This collaboration between Shakun Batra and Vir Hirani highlights the blending of legacy and mentorship within Bollywood. As Bollywood evolves, prioritizing nuanced storytelling and innovative digital content, this project represents a fresh, engaging cinematic experience.
