The legal battle surrounding the estate of the late businessman Sunjay Kapur has intensified, with his mother, Rani Kapur, accusing his widow, Priya Sachdev, of concealing his true net worth and manipulating control of his assets. The Delhi High Court is currently hearing the dispute, which was initially brought forward by Sunjay's children, Samaira and Kiaan, from his previous marriage to actress Karisma Kapoor. They allege that Priya Sachdev forged their father's will, effectively excluding them from inheriting his vast estate.
Rani Kapur, in her plea, claimed that Priya Sachdev moved swiftly to seize control of Sunjay's properties and business interests shortly after his sudden death in London on June 12, 2025, reportedly from a cardiac arrest during a polo match. Sunjay Kapur was 53 years old.
A central point of contention is the authenticity of Sunjay Kapur's will, which reportedly leaves the majority of his estate to Priya Sachdev, excluding his children, mother, and other family members. Rani Kapur stated that she was unaware of any such will and believes the document presented by Priya is likely fraudulent. She argues that it contradicts Sunjay's consistent acknowledgment of owing everything to his mother. Her counsel asserted, "If he truly intended to leave me out, he would have said so expressly".
Rani Kapur further claimed that Sunjay had removed Priya from the board of Sona Comstar's holding firm, AIPL, on March 31, 2023, telling investors that "something needed to be reversed". She finds it inconsistent that Priya then assumed the role of Managing Director less than a week after Sunjay's death and regained her position as a director shortly thereafter.
Adding another layer to the accusations, Rani Kapur alleged a significant discrepancy between Sunjay's reported income and his remaining bank balance. She stated that his annual salary was ₹60 crore (approximately $7.2 million USD), yet his bank balance reflected less than ₹2 crore (approximately $240,000 USD), along with crypto assets of around ₹1.69 crore. She also alleges that Priya Sachdev concealed significant wealth, including paintings, bank balances, mutual funds, life insurance, rental income, and luxury watches. Rani's lawyer sought directions for Priya Sachdev to furnish details about her and Sunjay Kapur's assets over the past two years.
Priya Sachdev's legal representative, Rajiv Nayar, has defended the will, arguing that there is nothing suspicious about a husband leaving all his assets to his wife. He stated that Sunjay's father had also done the same, leaving everything to Rani Kapur. Nayar relayed Priya's statement, saying, "There is nothing suspicious about a husband giving everything in his assets to his wife... It is a healthy tradition which perhaps has been maintained".
However, the lawyer representing Samaira and Kiaan Kapoor has questioned the will's validity, pointing out mistakes such as the wrong home address for Sunjay's daughter and misspelled names. He also noted that Sunjay's will was not registered, unlike his father's.
Sunjay Kapur's net worth at the time of his death was estimated to be $1.2 billion (₹10,300 crore), making him one of the wealthiest individuals in the world. He was the chairman of Sona Comstar, a leading Indian automotive technology company with a global presence. The company manufactures auto components for major car companies and is known for its contributions to the electric vehicle revolution.
The next hearing is scheduled for December 3, where the Delhi High Court will continue to examine the evidence and arguments presented by both sides. The outcome of this legal battle will determine the fate of Sunjay Kapur's vast estate and the financial security of his family members.
