Malaika Arora on Divorce and Ageism: Men Praised for Marrying Younger Women, But Why Not Women?

Malaika Arora has recently addressed the persistent societal double standards she faces as a woman, particularly in the context of divorce and remarriage. In a conversation with Barkha Dutt for Mojo Story, Arora highlighted the disparity in how men and women are perceived when making similar life choices.

Arora pointed out that when a man decides to move on after a divorce and marries someone significantly younger, it is often met with praise and admiration. The reaction is typically, "Wow, what a man!" However, when a woman does the same, she is often subjected to judgment and scrutiny, with people questioning her choices and intentions. "Why would she do something like that? Doesn't she have sense?" are the kinds of questions she says women face.

Arora emphasized that women are constantly judged for being strong, and these judgments are often unavoidable. Despite this, she expressed her respect and love for the men in her life, acknowledging their positive influence.

Malaika's personal life has been under constant public scrutiny. After nearly twenty years of marriage, she and Arbaaz Khan announced their separation in 2016, citing compatibility issues, and officially divorced in 2017. Malaika then entered a relationship with actor Arjun Kapoor, who is more than 12 years younger than her, which led to considerable media attention and public commentary. The two reportedly broke up in 2024. Meanwhile, Arbaaz Khan has since married Sshura Khan, a makeup artist, and recently welcomed a baby with her.

Arora reflected on her decision to marry Arbaaz Khan at the age of 25, a choice that surprised her mother, who had advised her to enjoy life and not marry the first person she dated. Arora admitted that she felt a personal desire to marry young, despite not facing any familial pressure. She also spoke about the ridicule she faced after her divorce, with some people assuming she received a large alimony. She expressed shock and disbelief that her financial status should dictate her worth or the respect she receives.

Looking back at her early 20s, Arora said she never imagined the life she has today. She thought she would do a few songs, get married, have kids, and settle down. However, she realized that she was more ambitious and wanted to do something different and better.

Despite the challenges and judgments she has faced, Malaika Arora remains open to the possibility of marriage in the future. She is currently rumored to be dating Harsh Mehta. She also advises her younger self to take time before marrying, emphasizing that it is a huge commitment.
