The highly anticipated release of "Akhanda 2," starring Nandamuri Balakrishna, has been postponed indefinitely due to a legal dispute. The film, directed by Boyapati Srinu, was scheduled to hit theaters on December 5, 2025, but the makers announced the postponement just a day before, leaving fans in shock.
The primary reason for the delay is a legal battle involving Eros International Media Limited and 14 Reels Plus, the production house behind "Akhanda 2". The Madras High Court issued an injunction against the film's release following an appeal filed by Eros, who claim that 14 Reels Plus owes them approximately ₹28 crore from a previous arbitration decision. Eros argued that 14 Reels Plus LLP is essentially a continuation of 14 Reels Entertainment, and releasing the film without settling the debt would allow the promoters to profit while evading their financial liabilities. The court has barred the release of "Akhanda 2" in theaters, on digital platforms, or via satellite broadcast until the dues are cleared.
Adding to the disappointment, the film's premiere shows, initially scheduled for December 4th in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, were canceled due to "technical issues". The production house, 14 Reels Plus, conveyed their regret via a statement on X (formerly Twitter), stating, "With a heavy heart, we regret to inform you that #Akhanda2 will not be releasing as scheduled due to unavoidable circumstances". They further added, "This is a painful moment for us, and we truly understand the disappointment it brings to every fan and movie lover awaiting the film. We are working tirelessly to resolve the matter at the earliest. Our sincere apologies for the inconvenience caused".
The cancellation of the premiere shows and the subsequent postponement of the release have sparked widespread disappointment among fans. Many had been eagerly anticipating the film, especially given the success of its predecessor, "Akhanda". Advance bookings had reportedly crossed ₹6 crore, indicating the high level of anticipation.
Adding to the complications, there are reports that the Telangana State Government's mandate to allocate 20% of increased ticket prices to the Movie Artists Welfare Association may have also contributed to the makers' decision to halt the premiere shows.
The situation remains uncertain, with no new release date announced. The makers have assured that they are working to resolve the issues and will provide a positive update soon. Meanwhile, fans and industry members are left waiting, hoping for a swift resolution to the legal and financial hurdles that "Akhanda 2" is currently facing.
