Sonakshi Sinha is addressing the public reaction to her interfaith marriage with Zaheer Iqbal, emphasizing that it was her decision as a "grown-a** woman". The Bollywood actress, who married Zaheer Iqbal in June 2024, has recently spoken out about the criticism and unsolicited opinions surrounding their union.
During an appearance on Soha Ali Khan's podcast in December 2025, Sonakshi described the negative reactions as "just noise". She highlighted that she isn't the first person to have an interfaith marriage and won't be the last. She expressed bewilderment at the number of people, even strangers, who felt entitled to comment on her life choice.
Sonakshi and Zaheer's wedding took place on June 23, 2024, following a seven-year relationship. The couple chose to marry under the Special Marriage Act, which allows people of different faiths to marry without converting. The ceremony was held at Sonakshi's Mumbai apartment, followed by a reception attended by numerous Bollywood celebrities.
In the face of negativity, Sonakshi chose to focus on the joy of starting a new chapter with her partner. She admitted that dealing with the negativity on her wedding day was overwhelming, leading her to disable comments on social media to avoid seeing anything negative about her, Zaheer, or their families.
Sonakshi revealed that she and Zaheer had faced challenges in their relationship three years prior and had even attended couples therapy. She credited Zaheer with suggesting therapy, which she believes strengthened their bond after just a couple of sessions.
Sonakshi has previously stated that religion was never a point of contention in their relationship. She emphasized that neither she nor Zaheer is imposing their religion on the other and that they appreciate and respect each other's cultures and traditions. She noted that they celebrate festivals in each other's homes and respect each other's families.
Sonakshi's father, Shatrughan Sinha, was supportive of the marriage, stating, "If the couple is ready to get married, who can stop them?". Sonakshi's mother also supported the union, having had a love marriage herself.
Sonakshi's decision to speak out about the public reaction to her marriage underscores the importance of personal choice and the irrelevance of unsolicited opinions. She and Zaheer are prioritizing their happiness and commitment to each other above the "noise".
