Ranveer Singh's journey to landing the lead role in the 2010 hit film "Band Baaja Baaraat" was far from a straightforward success. Despite now being one of Bollywood's most sought-after actors, his casting was initially met with skepticism and doubt.
Director Maneesh Sharma revealed that most people around him were unconvinced about Ranveer for the role, especially considering it was a Yash Raj Films (YRF) production, typically known for casting established stars. Sharma even recalled his own family questioning his decision after Ranveer's initial photos were released. They wondered what he was doing by choosing a newcomer for such a significant project.
Adding to the initial reluctance, Aditya Chopra, the head of YRF, was not initially impressed with Ranveer's looks or attractiveness based on his pictures. However, casting director Shanoo Sharma saw potential in Ranveer and insisted that he undergo a screen test.
During his audition, Ranveer was assisted by Bhumi Pednekar, who was then working as Shanoo Sharma's assistant. Ranveer has credited Bhumi for making him feel comfortable and helping him deliver a strong performance. He revealed that Bhumi's friendly and professional approach significantly contributed to his good audition. A video clip from the audition shows Ranveer performing the scene where his character first meets Anushka Sharma's.
Aditya Chopra saw Ranveer's audition and immediately decided to cast him that same evening. Despite the initial reservations, Chopra saw a spark in Ranveer that convinced him he had the potential to become a star.
However, after the initial success of the audition, Ranveer faced another hurdle. During rehearsals with Anushka Sharma, his performance faltered. Aditya Chopra had to intervene, questioning why he was "screwing it up after a great first audition". Despite this setback, Chopra stood by his decision, having already seen the potential in Ranveer.
"Band Baaja Baaraat" marked the directorial debut of Maneesh Sharma and the debut role for Ranveer Singh. The film tells the story of two young entrepreneurs in Delhi, Shruti and Bittoo, who start a wedding planning business. They navigate the challenges of partnership and the complexities of romance amidst the backdrop of lavish Delhi weddings.

The film's success not only launched Ranveer Singh's career but also marked the first time Yash Raj Films launched a solo hero. Today, Ranveer acknowledges Shanoo Sharma for her role in recognizing his talent and giving him the opportunity.
