Hrithik Roshan Addresses "Dhurandhar" Controversy: Acknowledging Disagreement with Political Themes But Appreciating the Work.

Roshan Weighs In On "Dhurandhar," Praises Storytelling but Voices Political Concerns

In a recent social media post, actor Hrithik Roshan shared his thoughts on the film "Dhurandhar," starring Ranveer Singh and directed by Aditya Dhar, sparking conversation among fans and industry insiders alike. While commending the film's cinematic appeal and storytelling, Roshan also expressed reservations about its political undertones.

"Dhurandhar," which was released on December 5th, 2025, is an espionage thriller set in the late 2000s, drawing inspiration from real-life events to create a fictionalized account of India's conflict against terror operations emanating from Pakistan. Ranveer Singh plays Hamza, an Indian spy tasked with infiltrating a criminal gang. The film explores themes of espionage, crime, and intelligence operations, and has reportedly grossed over ₹100 crore within a week of its release.

Roshan, who maintains a warm relationship with both Singh and Yami Gautam (Dhar's wife and Roshan's co-star in "Kaabil"), took to Instagram to share his review. He wrote, "I love cinema, I love people who climb into a vortex and let the story take control, spin them, shake them until what they want is purged out of them onto the screen. Dhurandhar is an example of that. Loved the storytelling. It's cinema".

However, Roshan's praise was nuanced. He added, "I may disagree with the politics of it and argue about the responsibilities us filmmakers should bear as citizens of the world. Nevertheless, can't ignore how I loved and learned from this one as a student of cinema. Amazing".

Roshan's comments are notable as he doesn't often make overt political statements regarding films. His remarks have ignited discussions about the role of filmmakers in portraying political narratives and the potential impact of cinema on shaping public opinion.

Roshan wasn't alone in sharing his views on "Dhurandhar." Akshay Kumar also praised the film, commending its gripping narrative. Smriti Irani, an actress and politician, reflected on the film's resonance with real-life experiences, particularly for those affected by terrorism.

Prior to its release, "Dhurandhar" faced other controversies. Yami Gautam spoke out against paid hype campaigns targeting films, a sentiment echoed by Roshan who emphasized the importance of genuine feedback and journalistic integrity. Gautam described such practices as "extortion," saying that they create unfair perceptions about films and damage the industry. Roshan supported her call for authentic reviews, stating that paid campaigns undermine the true voice of critics and deprive filmmakers of valuable feedback.

Additionally, the film faced a legal challenge from the family of the late Major Mohit Sharma, who claimed that the film's promotional material mirrored Sharma's military career without consent. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) ultimately approved the film's release with modifications.

Despite the controversies, "Dhurandhar" has garnered significant attention and commercial success. Roshan's statement adds another layer to the ongoing conversation surrounding the film, highlighting the complexities of art, politics, and representation in contemporary cinema.
