Actor Angad Bedi recently revealed the strained relationship he had with his father, the late legendary cricketer Bishan Singh Bedi, following a pivotal decision he made early in his career. The rift, which lasted for a significant period, stemmed from Angad's choice to cut his hair, a decision that deeply upset his father.
Angad, who is Sikh, made the difficult choice to cut his hair in his late teens to further his career in the film industry. He was advised that his long hair might not be well-received in the movie business, prompting him to make a change that he hoped would open doors. "I thought if I have to go into it full throttle, I will do what it takes", Angad stated, emphasizing his commitment to his chosen path.
However, this decision had significant repercussions on his relationship with his father, Bishan Singh Bedi, who was a devout Sikh. The former cricketer, known for his strong opinions and traditional values, was reportedly "hurt" and "disturbed" by his son's actions. This led to a prolonged period of silence between them.
While different sources report slightly different durations, the estrangement lasted for a considerable time. Some reports suggest the father and son didn't speak for 12 years, while others claim it was closer to 15 or even 20 years. Regardless of the exact length, it was a challenging period for Angad, who was navigating his career while dealing with the emotional distance from his father.
The turning point in their relationship came after the release of the film "Pink" in 2016, in which Angad played a significant role. Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan, who also starred in the film, played a crucial role in mending the father-son bond. Bachchan arranged a special screening of "Pink" for Bishan Singh Bedi and invited people in Delhi.
During the screening, Amitabh Bachchan spoke to Bishan Singh Bedi, emphasizing Angad's talent and potential in the film industry. Big B told his father that his son was meant to be in the cinema and asked him to stop worrying about the haircut. After watching the film, the legendary cricketer was finally able to appreciate his son's work and understand his career choice.
In a touching moment, Bishan Singh Bedi, who was not known for giving compliments easily, hugged Angad and said, "Not bad, son". He acknowledged Angad's success and offered words of encouragement, marking a new chapter in their relationship. "Now you justify your haircut to me," Angad recalled his father saying, signifying his acceptance.
Although their relationship had its challenges, Angad acknowledges his father's influence on his life and career. Bishan Singh Bedi, despite his initial disapproval, ultimately came to terms with his son's choices and recognized his achievements in the film industry. Angad shared that his father's acceptance meant the world to him, and they were able to forge a stronger bond in the years that followed. Bishan Singh Bedi passed away on October 23, 2023, after a prolonged illness.
