As Thalapathy Vijay's highly anticipated film, Jana Nayagan, faces unexpected delays, fans will have a reason to celebrate this Pongal. Vijay's 2016 blockbuster, Theri, is set for a worldwide theatrical re-release on January 15, 2026. The re-release aims to fill the void left by the postponement of Jana Nayagan and offer fans a chance to relive the magic of the action thriller on the big screen.
Jana Nayagan, directed by H. Vinoth and produced by KVN Productions, was originally scheduled to be released on January 9, 2026. The film stars Vijay alongside Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, and Mamitha Baiju. However, the film's release has been hampered by certification issues with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
Producer Venkat K. Narayana clarified that the film was submitted to the CBFC on December 18, 2025. On December 22, the filmmakers were asked to make certain changes to get a U/A 16+ certificate. After the modifications were made and the film was resubmitted, the certificate was still not granted. The matter is currently under judicial review, with the next court hearing scheduled for January 21, 2026.
SSR Entertainment, the distributors of Jana Nayagan in Kerala, had earlier announced a January 14 release date. However, given the ongoing legal challenges, the pan-India release date remains uncertain.
In light of these delays, the makers of Theri have decided to re-release the film, much to the delight of Vijay fans. Producer Kalaipuli S. Thanu of V Creations officially confirmed the re-release plans. V Creations also unveiled a new poster for the re-release, which has gone viral among fans.
Theri, directed by Atlee, features Vijay in dual roles: DCP Vijay Kumar, a fearless police officer, and Joseph Kuruvilla, a loving father with a hidden past. The film also stars Samantha Ruth Prabhu and Amy Jackson in key roles, with Nainika playing Vijay's daughter. Theri revolves around Vijay Kumar, who quits his police career to raise his daughter in safety. When her life is threatened, he is forced to confront his past and return to a path of violence to protect her.
Theri was a major commercial success upon its release in 2016. The film has been remade in Sinhala as Goree (2019) and in Assamese as Ratnakar (2019). A Hindi remake, Baby John, starring Varun Dhawan and Keerthy Suresh, has also been released. Additionally, a Telugu remake titled Ustad Bhagat Singh, starring Pawan Kalyan, is currently in production.
The re-release of Theri offers fans a chance to celebrate the film's tenth anniversary on the big screen.
