Suruchi Sharma on short film distribution challenges and the need for deeper industry conversation.

Jaipur - National award-winning director Suruchi Sharma, known for her nuanced portrayal of culture, heritage, and sustainability in films like "Meen Raag", believes the conversation around short film distribution in India is virtually non-existent. Sharma, who won a National Award for her short film "Meen Raag" in 2020, shared her insights in an exclusive interview, emphasizing the need for a robust support system for independent filmmakers and a more comprehensive reach for Indian documentaries and shorts.

"The landscape for short film distribution is still nascent," Sharma stated. "We haven't even begun to scratch the surface of how to effectively reach audiences. Most filmmakers rely on film festivals, which, while valuable, only offer limited exposure". She highlighted the challenges independent filmmakers face in navigating budget constraints and marketing their films effectively.

Sharma, who is based out of Rajasthan, has consistently championed community initiatives and regional filmmaking. "Everybody thinks that going to Mumbai is the only answer. But I chose to be in Jaipur and make my films there," she said. Her production house, Studio Ainak, supports emerging filmmakers and promotes local stories.

When asked about increasing the reach of indie films, Sharma emphasized the power of media professionals amplifying voices that lack resources. She also suggested that film festivals should implement marketing campaigns to promote indie films, adding significant value to their exposure.

Sharma's short film "Gagan Gaman," which premiered at the MAMI Mumbai Film Festival 2024, is set to release on BookMyShow Stream on January 20, 2026, coinciding with the birthday of filmmaker David Lynch, who is a creative influence of Sharma. Following this, it will be available on Apple TV, Google Play, and YouTube Movies. "Gagan Gaman" explores a modern woman's quest within a Rajasthani folk tale. Sharma blends tradition with modernity to craft heartfelt stories.

In addition to her work as a filmmaker, Sharma is also involved in Rewrite, a screenwriter's residency program for upcoming feature writers. She is currently developing her first feature film while continuing to produce various projects.

Looking ahead, Sharma hopes to see more dedicated platforms and initiatives that support short film distribution, creating a sustainable ecosystem for independent filmmakers to thrive. She advises aspiring filmmakers to "have the strength to carry on.".
