Rishab Shetty Defends Kantara's Female Characters Amid Criticism: The Story Demands It

Rishab Shetty, the director and lead actor of the Kannada film Kantara, has responded to criticism surrounding the portrayal of women in the movie. Released in 2022, Kantara became a major success, garnering two National Awards, including Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment and Best Actor for Shetty. However, the film also faced backlash, with some viewers and critics arguing that the female characters were inadequately developed and portrayed in a limited and stereotypical manner, especially when compared to the male-driven narrative.

In an interview with News18 Showsha, Shetty addressed these concerns, stating that he disagrees with the notion that Kantara is a "man's world". He emphasized the importance of the mother's character, played by Manasi Sudhir, in the first film, noting that she was integral to the climax. Shetty explained that during the dance ritual where he embodied a divine spirit, his mother's character played a crucial role, playing a dhol-like instrument, and the ritual could only be performed after receiving her blessings. He further added, "Our film is about divinity, and that's a superior energy. In the same way, a mother is also synonymous with a superior energy".

Shetty also defended the portrayal of Shiva, the main character, clarifying that his initial borderline villainous behavior was essential to the story. He highlighted Shiva's vulnerability, which was showcased through his relationship with his mother. "The only person he's fearful of is his mother. We've also shown his vulnerable side in the film," Shetty stated.

Regarding the female characters in his films, Shetty asserted that he gives them significant importance. He cited the character of Kanakavathi, played by Rukmini Vasanth in Kantara: Chapter 1, as a strong example. He stated, "I think I justify my female characters even in a film where the story revolves around a man. I understand the conversations that had happened. But that's their perspective. I know that I've justified them".

Rukmini Vasanth also defended her role and the film's portrayal of women, stating that Kantara: Chapter 1 explores feminine energy and that her character, Kanakavathi, was written with depth and agency within the Kantara universe. She welcomed discussions and dialogues on the themes the film touches upon.

Despite Shetty's defense, some viewers maintain their criticism, arguing that the female characters lack sufficient development and are often relegated to passive roles. Some critics felt that the love story in the film was not convincing. Others appreciate characters like Leela, played by Sapthami Gowda, for bringing emotional power into the narrative, viewing her as the emotional anchor to the protagonist.

Kantara: Chapter 1, a prequel to the 2022 film, has also received mixed reviews. Some critics found the narrative structure haywire and the screenplay swaying away from the film's philosophy. Others praised the visual spectacle and Rishab Shetty's performance but felt that the film lacked the soul of its predecessor.
