Superstar Rajinikanth and director Nelson Dilipkumar may be teaming up for a third time, according to recent reports. The duo is currently working on Jailer 2, the sequel to their 2023 blockbuster, and if sources are to be believed, another project is already under consideration.
Rumors suggest that Nelson Dilipkumar narrated a fresh storyline to Rajinikanth during the filming of Jailer 2. The superstar was reportedly captivated by the idea and is eager to collaborate on this new venture. Reportedly, Rajinikanth intends to complete his commitment to a film with Kamal Haasan before potentially reuniting with Nelson. As of now, this remains a rumor, and fans await official confirmation.
Their previous collaborations have been quite successful. In 2022, Sun Pictures announced that Rajinikanth and Nelson Dilipkumar would be working together on Thalaivar 169, which was later titled Jailer. Jailer was released theatrically on August 10, 2023. The film garnered positive reviews and became the highest-grossing Tamil film of 2023.
The success of Jailer paved the way for Jailer 2, which is currently in production. Jailer 2 is touted to be an even grander action spectacle than its predecessor. The film is scheduled for release on June 12, 2026. Filming is currently taking place in Kerala.
Jailer 2 will see the return of Ramya Krishnan, Yogi Babu, and Mirnaa, reprising their roles from the first film. S. J. Suryah is among the new cast members joining the team. Shiva Rajkumar, Nandamuri Balakrishna, and Mithun Chakraborty will also make cameo appearances.
Nelson Dilipkumar's signature dark comedy style, which was well-received in Jailer, is expected to be a prominent element in the sequel as well.
Prior to the release of Jailer in 2023, Nelson had expressed interest in creating sequels to his films. Following the film's success, reports of a potential sequel resurfaced. By late December 2024, Nelson began location scouting for the film. The promotional teaser for Jailer 2 was shot by December 6, 2024, and released on January 14, 2025, coinciding with Pongal.
Rajinikanth's recent film Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, is currently streaming on OTT platforms.
