Hugh Jackman is teasing a possible return as Wolverine in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday film, set to release on December 18, 2026.

Jackman, who seemingly retired from the role after 2017's Logan, was coaxed back for 2024's Deadpool & Wolverine. The success of Deadpool & Wolverine has fueled speculation about Jackman's future within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), especially with the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars films.

During a recent appearance on The Graham Norton Show, Jackman addressed the swirling rumors. When asked about reprising his role as Wolverine in Avengers: Doomsday, Jackman responded with playful ambiguity: "Maybe. I'm never saying 'never' ever again! I did mean it until the day I changed my mind. I did mean it for quite a few years. I have done ten films now, so I think they have enough for an AI version of me!”.

Jackman's comment about an "AI version" of Wolverine references a growing debate within the film industry regarding the use of artificial intelligence. However, his willingness to entertain the possibility of returning suggests that he might not be entirely done with the character.

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has previously stated that the studio is always looking for ways to integrate Deadpool and Wolverine into the MCU. With the Multiverse Saga in full swing, Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars present ideal opportunities for such appearances. Furthermore, multiple original X-Men stars, including Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Rebecca Romijn, and Alan Cumming, are confirmed to appear in Doomsday, increasing the likelihood of Jackman's return.

Despite the rumors and fan enthusiasm, Jackman's participation in Avengers: Doomsday remains unconfirmed. Marvel is known for keeping cameos and surprise appearances under wraps. In late May 2025, when asked about Avengers: Doomsday on The View, Jackman teased, “I can’t say much…I really have nothing to add, and if I did, I would find a really cool way to not say it, but I actually have nothing to add".

Avengers: Doomsday, directed by the Russo brothers, who are returning to the MCU, is slated to feature a vast ensemble cast and a storyline that pulls from all corners of the Marvel multiverse. The film has faced delays and is now set to arrive in theaters on December 18, 2026, with Avengers: Secret Wars following on December 17, 2027.

Whether Jackman returns as Wolverine remains to be seen, but his recent comments have reignited hope among fans.
