In a recent interview, A$AP Rocky revealed that his mother, Renee Black, was the driving force behind his relationship with Rihanna. The rapper, now 37, shared that his mother had been encouraging him to date Rihanna for a long time, even before they officially became a couple in late 2019. The couple publicly confirmed their relationship in 2021 and now share three children: sons RZA, 3, Riot, 2, and daughter Rocki, 3 months.
During his appearance on the New York Times' Popcast on Thursday, January 15, A$AP Rocky recalled his mother's persistence. "My mother used to say sh*t like, 'I know you like this girl that you with right now, but I want you with RiRi,'" he said. He admitted that he initially brushed off her suggestions, responding with, "Ma why you keep saying that? That girl don't even want me like that. Like be cool, Ma. Like that's just my friend. Chill". Despite his initial reluctance, his mother remained firm, telling him, "I'm telling you, she real".
A$AP Rocky acknowledged the wisdom in his mother's words, stating, "And mothers know best". He reflected on how his relationship with Rihanna has profoundly impacted his life. "A woman will change your whole life, especially if it's a companion," he explained. He added that being with Rihanna has brought clarity and a new perspective to his life. "Before I had my children, it was like being with my girl [would take] a blindfold off," he said. He also noted that a partner often sees things more clearly than oneself.
Rocky emphasized the deep connection he shares with Rihanna, highlighting their many similarities. "It was just like we were on the same page,” A$AP Rocky explained. “Born the same year. My dad is from her country. My family, when I go back, I get to see both sides of my family. It's so many similarities, it's just funny. We laugh about it a lot". He also admitted that even before their romantic relationship, he always felt a special connection with her. "She was always my boo, you know what I'm saying? Like I always f**ked with her,” he said.
Looking back, A$AP Rocky expressed gratitude for the timing of their relationship. "I'm thankful that she was put in my life at that time, because I think any time prior to that, I don't think I was ready for something like that,” he shared. He also hinted at the possibility of marriage, referring to himself as a "loving husband" in another recent interview.
A$AP Rocky is currently preparing for the release of his fourth studio album, Don't Be Dumb, which is set to arrive on Friday.
