In response to growing speculation, Aditya Dhar, the director of the upcoming film "Dhurandhar," starring Ranveer Singh, has clarified that the film is not based on the life of Major Mohit Sharma. The clarification came after increasing chatter on social media, with many drawing parallels between Singh's character and the real-life story of the decorated Indian Army officer.
The rumors gained momentum following the release of the "Dhurandhar" trailer, which features Singh in an intense avatar, leading some to believe the film was a biopic of Major Mohit Sharma, who famously went undercover as Iftikhar Bhatt to infiltrate Hizbul Mujahideen in the early 2000s. The film is inspired by real-life incidents, geopolitical conflicts, and covert operations of RAW.
Adding to the speculation, Madhur Sharma, Major Mohit Sharma's brother, directly tagged Aditya Dhar on X (formerly Twitter), seeking confirmation on whether the film was indeed based on his brother's life. Dhar responded to the query, stating, "Hi, sir – our film Dhurandhar is not based on the life of braveheart Major Mohit Sharma AC(P) SM. This is an official clarification".
Dhar further assured that any future project based on Major Mohit Sharma's life would be undertaken with the family's full consent and consultation. "I assure you, if we do make a biopic on Mohit sir in the future, we will do it with full consent and in complete consultation with the family, and in a way that truly honors his sacrifice for the nation and the legacy it has left for all of us," he added.
Major Mohit Sharma was an officer of the Indian Army's elite 1st Para (Special Forces) unit. He was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra, India's highest peacetime gallantry award. He was recognized for his exceptional bravery and sacrifice during an operation in the Kupwara sector of Jammu and Kashmir in 2009, where he eliminated four terrorists and saved the lives of two fellow soldiers.
"Dhurandhar," written, directed, and co-produced by Aditya Dhar, is slated for release on December 5, 2025. The film features an ensemble cast including Ranveer Singh, Sanjay Dutt, Akshaye Khanna, R. Madhavan, and Arjun Rampal, with Sara Arjun and Rakesh Bedi in supporting roles. The film is produced by Jyoti Deshpande and Lokesh Dhar under the banners of Jio Studios and B62 Studios.
While "Dhurandhar" is not a biopic of Major Mohit Sharma, the characters in the film are reportedly inspired by real-life personalities. Sanjay Dutt's character is said to be based on SP Chaudhary Aslam, Akshaye Khanna's character on Rehman Dakait, R. Madhavan's character on NSA Ajay Sanyal (inspired by Ajit Doval), and Arjun Rampal's character on Major Iqbal, ISI (inspired by Ilyas Kashmiri).
The clarification from Aditya Dhar aims to set the record straight and manage expectations surrounding "Dhurandhar," emphasizing that while the film is inspired by real-life events, it is ultimately a fictional spy thriller.
