Malayalam superstar Mohanlal is reportedly set to join the cast of Jailer 2, the highly anticipated sequel to the blockbuster Tamil action film Jailer, in early December. Industry insiders suggest that Mohanlal will begin filming his scenes alongside Rajinikanth and other South Indian cinema stars starting December 2. While there hasn't been an official announcement, sources close to the production indicate that Mohanlal's appearance on set marks a significant moment for what promises to be an even more spectacular cinematic experience than the original.
Mohanlal's involvement is expected to occur over two distinct shooting periods. He is scheduled to wrap up his initial scenes within a couple of days from December 2, before returning to his Malayalam film commitments. The actor will then rejoin the Jailer 2 team between December 21 and December 24 to complete his remaining portions, balancing his various projects while contributing to director Nelson Dilipkumar's vision.
The inclusion of Mohanlal has already generated considerable excitement within the entertainment industry. His cameo as the villain Mathew in the original Jailer left a lasting impression on audiences in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, with his performance becoming one of the film's most discussed highlights. Fans have eagerly anticipated his potential return, and these reports suggest their hopes may soon be realized.
Jailer 2 has generated huge interest, thanks to the phenomenal reach of the first part of the film, which went on to emerge a huge blockbuster, raking in around Rs 650 crores.
Production for Jailer 2 commenced in Chennai on March 10 this year, according to Sun Pictures, the production house behind the action entertainer. The film's creative team remains largely intact, with Anirudh Ravichander returning to compose the music, having played a crucial role in the success of the first film.
Rajinikanth had previously stated in May that filming was expected to wrap up by December. Speaking to reporters at Chennai airport, he confirmed, "Shooting of Jailer 2 is progressing well. It will be December by the time the film ends".
Interest in the film further increased after Sun Pictures released a teaser described as both funny and thrilling. Actress Ramya Krishnan, who plays Rajinikanth's wife Vijaya Pandian, also shared her experience on the first day of shooting for the sequel in Attapaadi, Kerala. Mirnaa Menon, who plays Rajinikanth's daughter-in-law Swetha Pandian, is also expected to have a significant role in the sequel.
While there have been reports about Vijay Sethupathi joining the cast in Goa, there has been no official confirmation regarding his inclusion.
Jailer 2 is scheduled to be released on June 12, 2026.
