Boman Irani Eyes Directorial Debut: A Legendary Figure After 'The Mehta Boys' Project.

Boman Irani, celebrated for his roles in iconic films such as "Munna Bhai MBBS," "3 Idiots," and "Khosla Ka Ghosla," made his directorial debut in 2025 at the age of 65 with "The Mehta Boys". Now, as he celebrates his birthday, Irani reveals he is already working on his next directorial venture.

"The Mehta Boys," which premiered at the Chicago South Asian Film Festival, explores the intricate relationship between a father and son. Irani not only directed but also co-wrote the film with Oscar-winning screenwriter Alexander Dinelaris Jr., known for his work on "Birdman". The film features Boman Irani himself, alongside Avinash Tiwary and Shreya Chaudhary.

Irani launched his production house, Irani Movietone, in January 2019. "The Mehta Boys" is the first feature film production under this banner, co-produced with Chalkboard Entertainment LLP. The film was released on Amazon Prime Video.

Looking ahead, Boman Irani has expressed his desire to explore different genres in his future directorial projects. "I've made a conscious decision after directing a family drama, I'm going to pick a completely different genre," he stated. "Just because people liked the first one, I don't think I can stick to the same genre. I want to enjoy different worlds of cinema".

When asked about actors he wishes to collaborate with, Irani revealed his admiration for Ranbir Kapoor and Vicky Kaushal. "I would love to direct Ranbir Kapoor. I love Vicky Kaushal," he said. He emphasized that the script is the most important element and that it should dictate the casting choices. Irani has previously worked with Ranbir Kapoor in "Sanju" and Vicky Kaushal in "Dunki".

In addition to his directorial pursuits, Irani remains dedicated to teaching aspiring writers through his venture, Spiral Bound. Launched in 2020, Spiral Bound conducts workshops and masterclasses for amateur and professional screenwriters.

Boman Irani's journey into directing signifies his passion for storytelling and his willingness to challenge conventional timelines. "Since childhood, I always thought that someday I was going to be a director," Irani said. "I don't understand this stereotype that a person becomes an actor at 25 and a director at 35. I don't let other people decide my diary and timeline; I'll do it when I'm ready".

As he embarks on his second directorial project, Boman Irani continues to inspire with his multifaceted talent and his unwavering commitment to his craft.
