Vinayakan, who played the formidable antagonist Varman in Rajinikanth's blockbuster Jailer, has confirmed his return for the film's sequel, Jailer 2. The actor revealed this exciting news during media interactions while promoting his upcoming Malayalam film, Kalamkaval.
Vinayakan's portrayal of the eccentric idol smuggler Narasimhan in Jailer was widely appreciated by critics and audiences alike. This makes his return one of the most anticipated aspects of the sequel. However, the return of Vinayakan's character has sparked curiosity, as Narasimhan meets his end in the climax of Jailer. The actor has remained tight-lipped about how his character will be reintroduced in Jailer 2.
Jailer 2 will see Rajinikanth reprising his role as 'Tiger' Muthuvel Pandian. Ramya Krishnan is also expected to return as his wife. The film is directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, who also directed the first installment.
Following an extended shooting schedule in Goa, Rajinikanth has returned to Chennai. Sources suggest that production is progressing rapidly. Principal photography is expected to continue through December.
The film boasts the same core technical team from the first part, including composer Anirudh Ravichander, cinematographer Vijay Kartik Kannan, and editor R. Nirmal. Jailer 2 is backed by Kalanithi Maran's Sun Pictures and is slated for a worldwide release on June 12, 2026.
The sequel is expected to have several star-studded cameos, similar to the first film. Mohanlal is expected to join the filming unit in the coming days. There are also reports that Vijay Sethupathi has joined the cast, with his scenes potentially filmed during the Goa schedule. However, an official announcement regarding his involvement is still pending. Other big names like Telugu superstar Nandamuri Balakrishna, Vidya Balan, Suraj Venjaramoodu, and Mithun Chakraborty are also rumored to be part of the cast.
Meanwhile, Kalamkaval, starring Vinayakan and Mammootty, is set to release on December 5. In this film, Vinayakan plays a police officer, while Mammootty plays the antagonist.
