Tokyo, Japan – In a surprising intersection of politics and pop culture, Katy Perry joined her partner, former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, for a luncheon with former Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and his wife, Yuko, on Wednesday, December 3. The meeting in Tokyo marks the first formal political appearance for Perry alongside Trudeau, solidifying their relationship in the public eye.
Kishida, who served as Prime Minister of Japan from 2021 to 2024, shared a photo of the gathering on social media, depicting the two couples smiling in front of a Christmas tree. In his post, Kishida referred to Perry as Trudeau's "partner" and expressed his delight in continuing their friendship, highlighting the collaborative work he and Trudeau undertook during their time in office, including the "Japan-Canada Action Plan". The Japan-Canada Action Plan, also known as the Nikka Action Plan, is a 2022 initiative that outlines how the two countries would collaborate on issues such as security, trade, energy and humanitarian response in the Indo-Pacific region.
Trudeau echoed Kishida's sentiments, reposting the message and thanking him for his friendship and commitment to international cooperation. He expressed that both he and Katy were glad to have the opportunity to sit down with Kishida and his wife.
Perry, who is currently on her "Lifetimes" world tour, paused her performances to join Trudeau in Tokyo. The couple was also spotted holding hands while walking through Tokyo. For the luncheon, Perry sported a sleek green two-piece outfit paired with black tights, a turtleneck, and boots, while Trudeau donned a formal grey suit.
The relationship between Perry, 41, and Trudeau, 53, first gained public attention in July 2025 after they were seen spending time together in Montreal. This was shortly after Perry's separation from her former fiancé, Orlando Bloom, in June, and Trudeau's separation from his wife, Sophie Grégoire, in 2023. Perry and Bloom, who were engaged in 2019, have a daughter together and continue to co-parent. Trudeau and Grégoire, who were married in 2005, share three children and have stated that their focus remains on raising their children together.
Since July, Perry and Trudeau have been seen together on several occasions, including during Perry's "Lifetimes" tour. They made their first official public appearance as a couple in late October, attending a cabaret show at the Crazy Horse in Paris during Perry's birthday celebrations.
The meeting in Tokyo and the public acknowledgment from both Kishida and Trudeau represent a significant step in Perry and Trudeau's relationship. It also highlights the intersection of celebrity and politics in the modern world, with Perry now taking on a visible role alongside Trudeau in the international arena.
