Amit Shah mourns actor Dharmendra's death, remembers him as a man with a clean and pure heart.

Mumbai, India - Veteran actor Dharmendra, an icon of Indian cinema, passed away on Monday, November 24, 2025, at his residence in Mumbai at the age of 89. The actor, who would have celebrated his 90th birthday on December 8, had been in and out of Breach Candy Hospital earlier in the month due to breathing difficulties. He was later discharged and spent his final days at home with his family.

Dharmendra, whose full name is disputed as either Dharmendra Kewal Krishan Deol, Dharam Singh Deol or Dharmendra Singh Deol, was born on December 8, 1935, in Nasrali, Punjab. He is remembered as one of the most successful and beloved figures in the history of Indian cinema, with a career spanning 65 years and over 300 films.

The news of his death prompted an outpouring of tributes from prominent figures, including politicians and fellow members of the film industry. Union Home Minister Amit Shah expressed his condolences, calling Dharmendra's passing an "irreparable loss for the Indian film world".

In a statement made on social media platform ‘X’, Shah lauded Dharmendra’s six-decade-long career and his ability to breathe life into every character he portrayed. He noted that Dharmendra, who came from humble beginnings, had carved an "indelible identity" for himself in the film industry. Shah remarked that the actor won the hearts of millions across all age groups through his art. "Through his acting, he will forever remain among us," Shah wrote, also extending his prayers for strength to Dharmendra's family and admirers.

Shah further praised the actor's "very clean, pure heart", highlighting the actor’s humility. He acknowledged Dharmendra's remarkable ability to connect with audiences through diverse roles in films like "Sholay" and "Dharam Veer".

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also shared his condolences, stating that Dharmendra's death "marks the end of an era in Indian cinema". He recognized the actor as an iconic figure admired for his versatility, simplicity, and warmth. President Droupadi Murmu stated that Dharmendra's demise is "a great loss to Indian cinema", and that his legacy will inspire generations.

Dharmendra made his acting debut in 1960 with "Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere". He gained popularity in the mid-1960s with films like "Ayee Milan Ki Bela" and "Phool Aur Patthar". His career reached greater heights in later years, earning him the title of "He-Man" of Bollywood. In 1997, he was honored with the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award. Dharmendra also served as a member of the 15th Lok Sabha, representing the Bikaner constituency from 2004 to 2009.

Dharmendra's last rites were performed at the Pawan Hans crematorium in Mumbai. His final on-screen appearance will be in the upcoming war drama "Ikkis," scheduled for release this December.

Dharmendra is survived by his two wives, Prakash Kaur and Hema Malini, and his six children, including actors Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, and Esha Deol.
