Amaal Mallik's Struggle: Facing Rejection and "Reverse Nepotism" Despite Not Having a Silver Spoon in Bollywood

A recent episode of Bigg Boss 19 has sparked a heated debate about nepotism within the Indian entertainment industry, with music composer Amaal Mallik declaring that he has faced "reverse nepotism". The confrontation occurred during a discussion with television actor Gaurav Khanna, where the two clashed over the opportunities afforded to industry insiders versus outsiders.

The promo for the episode, released on November 13, 2025, shows Khanna arguing that initial opportunities are often based on connections rather than talent. Mallik countered that everyone faces their own struggles, regardless of background. Actress Malti Chahar added that while hard work may be the same, the struggles are not. Khanna then made a statement that resonated with many viewers, saying, "Where your struggle begins, we aspire". This highlighted the perception that those outside the industry face significantly higher hurdles.

Mallik, son of composer Daboo Malik, acknowledged that he had advantages but insisted his journey was not without obstacles. While admitting to "foot-in-the-door" moments, he argued that he is a product of "reverse nepotism".

Mallik has previously spoken about facing difficulties because of his surname. In a 2021 interview, he revealed that he and his brother, singer Armaan Malik, experienced a reluctance from people to offer them work once they knew their last name. He stated that when he used his full name, Amaal Mallik, he often didn't get opportunities, but when he omitted "Mallik," he was at least considered for assistant positions. He attributed this to the assumption that, because his father and uncle are composers, he would simply get work through them. He believes that people felt insecure about giving him work, thinking he would show their compositions to his established family members.

The concept of "reverse nepotism," as described by Mallik, suggests that belonging to a known family can sometimes create disadvantages. This can occur when individuals are pre-judged, face higher expectations, or are perceived as a threat by those who fear being overshadowed or losing opportunities.

Mallik's participation in Bigg Boss 19 has also drawn scrutiny, with some viewers accusing the show's producers of favoring him. Daboo Malik addressed these accusations, clarifying that Amaal is not calling the shots and is simply a musician who has been appreciated for his work. He emphasized that his son doesn't have the clout people assume he does.

Amaal Mallik's career includes composing for film, OTT platforms, and independent projects. He recently gained attention for his song "Kya Kiya Hain Tune" from Broken But Beautiful 3, showcasing his continued success in the music industry. Despite any perceived advantages or disadvantages, Mallik has carved out a place for himself through his talent and hard work.
