Hugh Jackman Praises "Song Sung Blue" as a Relatable Tale; Indian Release Date Announced.

Hugh Jackman has described his upcoming film, Song Sung Blue, as a "working-class fairytale," emphasizing the story's themes of perseverance, faith, and everyday survival. The film, co-starring Kate Hudson, is set to be released in Indian theaters on January 9, 2026. Universal Pictures India presents the film, with distribution handled by Warner Bros. Discovery.

Jackman explained that the film centers on two working-class individuals juggling multiple jobs while striving to achieve their shared dream of performing on stage. He noted that their motivation stems not from a desire for instant fame, but from the sense of purpose and vitality that music provides. While their dream does materialize, Jackman stressed that the journey is fraught with challenges, making the story deeply relatable. He stated, "It's a fairytale because they hold their dream so tightly and with so much faith and hope and confidence that it comes true. But it's not a straight line to fame and success".

Song Sung Blue is written and directed by Craig Brewer. Brewer, reflecting on the film, said he felt a strong connection to the characters and the filmmaker within the story. He added, "I remember so clearly thinking that this is the kind of story that, if ever I were given a chance, I would understand how to make into a movie for a mass audience. Because as much as I know that there's plenty of moments in the movie that one could call tragic, I still felt very inspired by their love story".

The film draws inspiration from the 2008 documentary of the same name by Greg Kohs and tells the story of Mike and Claire Sardina who are known for performing Neil Diamond songs as a tribute band named Lightning and Thunder. Jackman plays Mike Sardina, a Vietnam veteran and recovering alcoholic who works as a car mechanic by day and a musician by night. Hudson portrays Claire Stengl, a talented singer whose Patsy Cline act is filled with longing and hope. Their connection sparks when Mike sees Claire perform, leading them to form Lightning and Thunder. Fueled by the melody of "Sweet Caroline," their electrifying performances take them from small venues to a spotlight moment in Milwaukee.

The film also features Michael Imperioli, Ella Anderson, Mustafa Shakir, Fisher Stevens, and Jim Belushi. Song Sung Blue premiered at the AFI Film Festival on October 26, 2025.

Hudson received a Golden Globe Award nomination for her performance as Claire. The role also inspired her to reconnect with her musical background, resulting in the release of her debut album, Glorious, in 2024.

Jackman and Hudson have hinted at the possibility of a tour following the film's release.
