Bobby Deol, known for his versatility and recent resurgence in the film industry, shared his experiences working with Aryan Khan, Shah Rukh Khan's son, on the set of Aryan's directorial debut, "The Ba***ds of Bollywood," a satirical series currently streaming on Netflix. While Deol praised Khan's vision and directorial skills, he also jokingly revealed his slight irritation with the numerous takes required to achieve Khan's desired perfection.
At the preview launch event for "The Ba***ds of Bollywood" in Mumbai, Shah Rukh Khan introduced Bobby Deol, who plays Ajay Talwar, an established star, in the series. Deol expressed his admiration for Aryan's ability to translate his written emotions onto the screen, highlighting his talent in extracting the best performances from actors of all ages. However, he playfully added, "Woh alag baat hai usne bahut nichoda humein. Bahut mehnat karvayi humse," which translates to "It's another matter that he spent all of us, made us work really hard".
Deol recounted how Aryan's persistent requests for "one more take" became a running joke on set. Initially, Deol said he would good-naturedly agree, but the frequency of these requests became relentless. Shah Rukh Khan chimed in, revealing that Bobby even called him one night, exclaiming, "aa jaa yaar bahut takes le raha hai ye, ab mujhko jaana hai," meaning "come over, he's taking too many takes, and I need to leave now".
Despite the good-natured ribbing, Deol holds Aryan Khan in high regard. In an interview in Dubai, Deol stated that he felt like he was being directed by his own son. He was blown away by Aryan's conviction, clarity, thoughts and fire after Aryan narrated the script to him for seven hours straight. He recognized Khan as a taskmaster who pushed every aspect of the performance until it aligned with his vision. Deol acknowledged that while the process was tiresome, he enjoyed it, and that Aryan knew what he wanted from everyone.
Raghav Juyal, who also stars in the series, echoed Deol's sentiments, emphasizing Aryan's clear instructions and perfectionist approach. Juyal mentioned that even if they had already done over 20 takes, Aryan would still push for another, until he eventually gave Juyal more freedom after realizing he had to.
Deol also spoke about a bold twist in "The Ba***ds of Bollywood" that he kept secret from his family. He said that Aryan had told him about it and asked him not to tell anyone. Deol was taken aback, but thought it was a great and gutsy twist, and that the reason Aryan told him was so he could bring out subtle nuances in his performance.
"The Ba***ds of Bollywood" is a satirical take on the Hindi film industry, featuring Bobby Deol as a fading superstar and Juyal as an upcoming actor. The series marks Aryan Khan's foray into showbiz and is a sharp, satirical take on nepotism, vanity, and behind-the-scenes chaos in the film industry. The series also tributes Deol's film legacy, centering around his 1997 hit 'Duniya Haseeno Ka Mela'.
