Aamir Khan has publicly defended his son, Junaid Khan's, performance in his debut film, "Maharaj," amidst mixed reviews and controversy surrounding the movie. The film, which premiered on Netflix in June 2024, faced initial hurdles when its release was temporarily stayed by the Gujarat High Court following objections from a Vaishnavite sect. However, the stay was lifted, and the film was eventually released, allowing audiences to witness Junaid's portrayal of Karsandas Mulji, a journalist and social reformer who challenged religious malpractices in 19th-century India.

Despite some critics pointing out the film's slow pace and Junaid's initial stiffness in portraying the character, Aamir Khan has stood firmly by his son, asserting his belief in Junaid's acting abilities. According to reports from early 2025, Aamir likened Junaid's performance in "Maharaj" to his own debut in "Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak," acknowledging that while it wasn't flawless, it was promising. He noted that there were moments where Junaid's performance felt raw, but overall, he was impressed with his son's work, particularly highlighting the climax.

Aamir's defense of Junaid extends beyond "Maharaj" and also encompasses his son's theatrical debut, "Loveyapa," which, according to reports from June 2025, didn't fare well at the box office. In an interview, Aamir attributed the film's failure to the prevailing nepotism debate, suggesting that the negativity surrounding star kids might have unfairly impacted the film's reception. He praised Junaid's ability to transform into characters unlike himself, further solidifying his confidence in his son's talent. He also clarified that he has not interfered in Junaid's career and doesn't intend to, encouraging him to learn and grow independently.

The film "Maharaj" itself is based on the 1862 Maharaj Libel Case, a landmark legal battle that challenged religious authority and underscored the importance of journalism in social reform. Junaid Khan plays Karsandas Mulji, who exposed wrongdoing within the Vallabhacharya sect. Jaideep Ahlawat plays Jadunathji Maharaj, the religious figure at the center of the controversy. The film sparked outrage before its release, with some users claiming it could hurt religious sentiments and calling for a ban. However, the High Court eventually lifted the stay, stating that the film did not target the Vaishnav Pushtimarg sect as claimed.

The controversy surrounding "Maharaj" has brought attention to the delicate balance between artistic expression and respect for religious beliefs. Shalini Pandey, who played a significant role in the film, stated that the film did not disrespect any religion, and the negative reactions were based on assumptions. Junaid Khan also responded to the controversies, saying that the intention of the filmmakers was never to hurt anyone's sentiments. He emphasized that the film celebrates a community that stood up for what was right, highlighting themes of gender equality and the fight against religious superstitions.
