The year 2025 marks a significant milestone for the global K-pop sensation, BTS, as the members are nearing the completion of their mandatory military service, paving the way for a highly anticipated reunion. While six of the seven members undertook active duty, SUGA served as a social service agent, a distinction stemming from a past injury. This difference in service type has led to questions and discussions among fans and the public alike.

In South Korea, military service is a mandatory duty for all able-bodied men, designed to bolster the nation's defense against potential threats. The standard service duration typically ranges from 18 to 21 months. Recognizing BTS's immense cultural and economic contributions, the South Korean government revised the Military Service Act in 2020, allowing them to postpone their service until the age of 30. However, after much debate about potential exemptions, the group's agency, BigHit Music, announced in October 2022 that all seven members would fulfill their military duties.

The members enlisted at different times, with Jin being the first in December 2022. J-hope followed in April 2023. RM, Jimin, V, and Jungkook enlisted together in December 2023. As of June 2025, Jin and J-Hope have already completed their service. RM, V, Jimin, and Jungkook were discharged in June 2025.

SUGA commenced his alternative service as a social service agent in September 2023. Unlike the other members who engaged in traditional combat roles, SUGA's placement was determined by a prior shoulder injury. According to South Korea's Military Service Act, individuals assigned to public service roles typically serve longer durations, usually around 21 months, three months more than active duty. This explains why SUGA's service is expected to conclude on June 21, later than the others.

Serving as a social service agent involves various responsibilities, often assisting in public institutions and contributing to community welfare. While the specific details of SUGA's service remain private, the role generally focuses on providing support to those in need and contributing to the smooth functioning of public services.

BigHit Music has requested fans to refrain from visiting the discharge sites in person, emphasizing the importance of preventing overcrowding and ensuring everyone's safety. Instead, the agency encourages fans to send their support and encouragement to the members from afar.

With the anticipated return of all members in June 2025, the stage is set for a grand BTS reunion. While HYBE has expressed hope for full-group activities in 2025, specific plans for 2026 are still under discussion, suggesting a cautious approach to the group's comeback. The members themselves have expressed eagerness to reunite and showcase a stronger, better version of BTS to their fans. Their fans eagerly anticipate the group's future endeavors, with expectations of new music and performances.
